Shakespeare sonnet 130

The poet says that his mistress’s eyes are not as bright as the sun “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;” and even a red coral stone is brighter and redder than her lips “Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;” and when snow is white colore her breasts instead are. There may be a joking reference to sexual intercourse, as in: O let him marry a woman that cannot go, sweet Isis, I beseech thee!


It accomplishes this task by converting the opening quatrain into a cinquain, with an altered rime scheme from ABAB to ABABA. The rest of the sonnet follows the regular rime, rhythm, and function of the traditional sonnet. If snow is white, all I can say is that her breasts are a brownish grey colour. If hairs can be compared with wires then black hairs grow on her. It is indeed this blunt but charming sincerity that has made sonnet 1one of the most famous in the sequence.
